Headless Application Servers
The following lets you bypass difficulties with “headless” machines (machines without a video card).
xvfb and Solaris 10
To have a working headless server, your Solaris installation must include xvfb. This is included in Solaris 10. To find out if it is installed, type this on a shell’s command line:
pkginfo -l SUNWxwsrv
If successful, you will see this output:
DESC: X Window System Xvfb & ....
To set up xvfb, use the command:
/usr/openwin/bin/X -dev vfb screen <Hor.Pix>x<Vert.Pix>x<Depth>
Web Client on UNIX Systems
Xvfb must be running to have a web client work correctly. This is automated when you have application server start automatically. Confirm xvfb is running as follows:
>ps -ef | grep Xvfb
root 14860 14855 0 12:14:36 pts/3 0:00 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvfb :1 -screen 0 1152x900x8
dorado 16099 14502 0 14:51:24 pts/1 0:00 grep Xvfb
This is an example; the path that appears when you grep depends on your operating system.
